Miss Vlasta Vavra, 2429 Burr Oak, Riverside, Illinois. My dear Miss Vlasta:

I have your letter of October 15th, making inquiries about a book which you read some years ago, but of which you have forgotten the title.

The theme is a little bit unusual. It generally works the other way. It is the white man who falls in love with a colored woman. I know a number of such books, but I don't at the moment recall such a one as you mention.1

I will keep it in mind, though, and if my memory brings it back to me, I will write and let you know.

Sincerely yours, CWC:OS

Correspondent: Vlasta Vavra Nelson (1908–?), the daughter of Czech immigrants, was a stenographer who lived in Riverside, a village in Cook County, Illinois, near Chicago until at least 1950.

1. The book in question is most likely the 1903 novel The Quaint Companions by British novelist Leonard Merrick (1864–1939), which was reissued in 1919 as part of the novelist's complete works. [back]
