Mr. Charles W. Chestnutt, 1646 Union Trust Bldg., Cleveland, Ohio. Dear Sir:

Your name has been referred to me in my endeavors to locate the title of a book which I have read some years ago.

The story pertains to the courtship between a Negro gentleman and a white lady, through correspondence; a final personal meeting; disappointment; and a happy ending.

Do you recognize this brief synopsis, and could you enlighten me as to the title?1

Any assistance you could render me in this connection will be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully yours, (Miss) Vlasta Vavra 2429 Burr Oak, Riverside, Illinois

Correspondent: Vlasta Vavra Nelson (1908–?), the daughter of Czech immigrants, was a stenographer who lived in Riverside, a village in Cook County, Illinois, near Chicago until at least 1950.

1. The book in question is most likely the 1903 novel The Quaint Companions by British novelist Leonard Merrick (1864–1939), which was reissued in 1919 as part of the novelist's complete works. [back]
