COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA
CLEVELAND, OHIO
PROBATE JUDGE'S OFFICE
GEORGE S. ADDAMS,
PROBATE JUDGE
H. A. SCHWAB,
CHIEF CLERK
April 30th, 1931.
Charles W. Chesnutt,
1646 Union Trust Building,
Cleveland, Ohio.
Dear Mr. Chesnutt:
I thank you for your consideration in inscribing my copy of "The Conjure Woman"; it is a favor I greatly appreciate.1 The book itself is deserving of a prominent place in any library.
Truly yours, H. A. Schwab HAS/GMCorrespondent: Henry A. Schwab (1859–1936), born in Cleveland to German immigrants, served in the Cleveland Probate Court for nearly sixty years (1877–1936) under five different judges. He became Chief Clerk in 1902, was known as "Judge Schwab" because of his knowledge of the law, and likely knew Chesnutt from the courts; late in his life, he was also a fellow member of the Rowfant Club, a bibliographic society in Cleveland, and collected first editions.
