Dear Mr. Chesnutt-
I have been informed by a Mr. Daniel Freeman 1242 Ashland Rd. you city that Polly Simmons1 heirs were being looked up.
If there is any thing too it I wish you would investergate as I am the son of the late Rev Robert H Simmons, with who you know well.2

Simmons (1881–1964) was from Fayetteville, North Carolina, the youngest of six children of Robert Harrison Simmons (1839–1910) and his wife Frances Pettiford (1837–1886). He was married in 1909 and lived in Cumberland, North Carolina, in 1910.

2. Robert Harrison Simmons (1839–1910) was an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion minister from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Along with Chesnutt's father Andrew Jackson Chesnutt (1833–1920), he was one of the Fayetteville Black men to purchase the lot where the future Howard school was built in 1867–1868. He and his wife Frances Pettiford (1837–1886) had six children who were raised in Cumberland County, North Carolina, in and near Fayetteville. [back]
