Messrs. Small, Maynard & Co. of Boston have issued a life of Frederick Douglass, the publication being uniform in size and scope with the Beacon Biographies, a series that is giving in condensed form readable and authentic accounts of the lives of famous Americans. The salient features of the career of Douglass are touched upon and the author has epitomized the judgment of the contemporaries of the famous colored orator as to his abilities and character. To Charles W. Chestnutt has been entrusted this delicate task. The author has done his work well, and has, in his brief sketch, done much to revive the interest that Douglass created when the orator led the forlorn hope of his race for freedom and opportunity.
