CHICAGO JOURNAL, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1899

BOOKS AND BOOK NOTES

"The Wife of His Youth," and other stories of the color line, by Charles W. Chesnutt, is a most interesting book from cover to cover. It is superbly illustrated by Clyde O. De Land and splendidly gotten up by Houghton, Mifflin & Co. It would seem that Mr. Chesnutt has been unfortunate in his title, for several of the "other stories" in the book are more spirited and more appealing to the average reader. Especially is this so of "The Sheriff's Children" and "A Matter of Principle," two bits of southern life that have all the atmosphere of that section.

Rev. of The Wife of His Youth. In: "Books and Book Notes," The Chicago Journal 16 Dec. 1899: 12.
