[Review of The House Behind the Cedars]

The House Behind the Cedars. By CHARLES W. CHESNUTT, author of "The Conjure Woman," and "The Wife of His Youth." Houghton, Mifflin & Co. 1 vol. Crown 8vo. $1.10. By mail, $1.22.

Like Mr. Chesnutt's two previous books, this is a story of the Color Line, illustrating how impossible it is to hide or escape the heavy penalty of even the slightest heritage of negro blood. The heroine, who easily passes for white, wins a white lover, only to be dropped abruptly when he learns of the black drop in her veins.
